Wildcats Ground Eagles, Stay Undefeated In IVL

EL CENTRO – The Brawley Union High Wildcats were on the road Wednesday night in an IVL match-up against the Eagles of Southwest, and it took three closely contested games for the Wildcats to put away the Eagles and wrestle away the IVL title, after dropping it to the Eagles last season.

It was their second meeting of the year and the Eagles were itching to get revenge for their earlier straight set defeat at the hands of the Wildcats in Brawley.

In the first game the Wildcats took an early lead, jumping out 12-7, and it looked as though the Eagles would be checking out mentally, but it was not to be as the Eagles battled back and eventually knotted the game at 21.  With the score tied, the Wildcat’s Gabby Mohammad hit a beautiful volley that gave the Wildcats the lead and momentum.  The point began a 4-1 run that gave the Wildcats the win and a 1-0 game lead.

Game 2 was even more closely contested with the game tied multiple times, and both teams holding leads in the game.  But once again with a game tied 21-21 the Wildcats’ Mia Adams delivered a huge spike to give the Wildcats a 22-21 lead.  After trading scores back and forth the game ended with a final score of 25-23.

Up two games the Wildcats came out for the third game loose and fresh and jumped out to an 8-4 lead.  But the Eagles were not done for the night and hoped to force another game and took a 16-17 lead.

After being tied at 17 the Wildcats went on a 7-3 run to put them up 24-20.  All the Wildcats needed was one point but the Eagles refused to make it easy.

After dropping three straight points the Wildcats forced an Eagle out-of-bounds hit ending the game 25-23 in favor of the Wildcats, and the match 3-0.

“Tough match, Southwest is at home, tough environment, tough game start to finish, we just made fewer mistakes in there,” said Wildcat head coach Phil Finnell after the match.

The Wildcats now move to 17-14 overall on the season and 11-0 in IVL play.

Up next for Wildcats, they will be hosting Holtville in the last league match and overall match of the season on Thursday night.
