BRAWLEY – The June Artist of the Month, as chosen by the North County Coalition of the Arts (NoCCA) and The Desert Review, is Brawley resident, Vanessa Vaca.

Vanessa Vaca is an artist, but even more, she is a single mother of three, a businesswoman, a horsewoman, and a woman who strives to promote her craft.

Vaca attended Brooks College and majored in graphic design.

She owns San Sebastian’s on Main Street in Brawley. This is an eclectic store that has an inventory that defies description. At times, it looks like the property and scene shop of a major motion picture lot. Some of the items include pottery, furniture, and wall art.

The items that Vaca has designed or made herself are the keystone of her artistic ability. Making something from nothing is hard. Making art from nothing is creative.

Vaca designs belt buckles and bracelets from broken items of assorted materials, she transfers photography onto old wooden planks creating photo treasures, and will transform common household items with personalized touches into art that comes alive. Her wall hangings are cut on computer-assisted machines to produce a choice of unique graphics.

Her favorite mediums to work with are clay, graphic design, word working, and photo transfer are some of her favorite mediums.

Vaca assisted the Marketing Committee of the Brawley Chamber of Commerce in the design of the chamber logo. Helping others with graphics and artistic input is a natural response for her. She also holds art classes at her store, sharing her love of art with others.

“I appreciate being recognized for all of my work,” said Vaca. “I enjoy everything I do. It’s a fun creative process. If there is a project I want to do I just figure out how to get where I want it to look. I figure out how to make what I see in my mind.”

Congratulations to Vanessa Vaca for your well-deserved selection as June Artist of the Month.
