University freshman enrollment exceeds expectations

Exceeding all enrollment expectations, 102 Freshmen students from around the valley entered their first year of the Imperial Valley University Partnership (IVUP) program with classes beginning at Imperial Valley College (IVC) and San Diego State University-Imperial Valley (SDSU-IV) last week. With an average GPA of 3.32, the 102 students in the IVUP 2012 cohort are majoring in Criminal Justice, Liberal Studies and Psychology with guaranteed access to classes.

An educational initiative undertaken by Imperial Valley College, the Imperial County Office of Education and San Diego State University-Imperial Valley, the Imperial Valley University Partnership offers Imperial Valley students an accessible, high quality education. Joint admission of students to both IVC and SDSU-IV (initially admitted to both institutions) allows a seamless transition between the first two years of their undergraduate education and the final two year path towards a Bachelor’s degree.

“It is really amazing to finally begin our college experience with the IVUP program” said Alexia Gonzalez, a criminal justice major from Calexico High School. Now that the first day jitters have subsided for new students in the Imperial Valley University Partnership program, they are reveling in the realization that they will be paving the way for future cohorts of IVUP students and it has taken a lot of dedication from many to get them here.

Working for our future is so much easier now,” said Blanca Martija, liberal studies major from Calexico High School.

Said Edgar Bernal Sevilla, a psychology major from Imperial High School “So far, my experience with IVUP has been great. The coordinators are easily accessible and, after the hassle of adjusting to college life, they make it smooth sailing. I deem the partnership a success and I am positive it will continue to expand and offer many more paths to a brighter education in the future.”

Applications for the 2013 cohort will begin on October 1st. Further information could be found on the IVUP website at www.ivup.org

  1. What a great program-match it up with effective professional internship programs at local/regional public agencies, private enterprise and continue to diverify our economy and perhaps our best, brightest and strongest kids will no longer have to swim away from this desert island to find professional opportunities and brighter futures.
