CALIPATRIA — A Calipatria State Prison visitor, Janet Esteban, 36, from Tustin, went to see inmate Calderon and slipped into the restroom in the visiting facility. Staff found a strong order of marijuana and Esteban consented to a search; the outcome was positive for one bindle with a weight of 17.8 grams.
When staff opened the bindle for testing, three bindles were discovered. Two bindles weighed 8.0 grams and 5.5 grams, respectively, and both tested positive for heroin. The last bindle weighed 2.1 grams and tested positive for marijuana.
Visiting staff then asked for her consent to search her vehicle in which she agreed. Staff searched the vehicle with negative results for any further contraband.
The visitor had an approximately three-year-old minor with her. Child Protection Services was contacted and took custody of the minor. Calderon remained housed in facility C.
Esteban was arrested for introduction of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute. Ms. Esteban was transported to Imperial County jail.
Calderon is in prison for voluntary manslaughter with the Street Gang Act and the use of a firearm. He is serving a 25-year term and is slated to be released in 2033.
