EL CENTRO - A California Highway Patrol officer in the El Centro area observed a vehicle hit the on-ramp guardrail at the Imperial Avenue ramp to Interstate 8 eastbound around 2 p.m. October 28, according to a recently released CHP report. The CHP unit responded to the scene and found a Honda CBR motorcycle on the roadway, but no rider.
Upon searching the surrounding area, the motorcycle rider, a 33-year old male, Cliff Contreras of Holtville, was found on the other side of the guardrail from where the Honda motorcycle came to rest, according to the report.
Contreras was driving the Honda southbound from El Centro on Imperial Avenue to Interstate 8 using the on-ramp, the report said. For reasons still under investigation, Contreras allowed his motorcycle to drift to the right and off the roadway.
The report said the Honda apparently collided into the metal and concrete raised guardrail causing Contreras to be ejected from the vehicle. He was thrown over the guardrail and then down into the dirt berm next to the on-ramp. As a result of the collision Contreras sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The collision remains under investigation.
