HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High School Vikings varsity football team hosted San Diego Maranatha Christian for a non-league game Friday, Sept. 10, where the Vikings held on to a 42-10 win.
The Vikings opened the contest with first possession and drove to the 30-yard line of the Maranatha’s side. After a flag moved the chains backward, Holtville’s running back, Payton Iten, ran back-to-back rushes and led Holtville to the 25-yard line in Maranatha territory. Moments after, quarterback Spencer Hilfiker threw a touchdown pass to Holtville senior Mason Toten. The Vikings went up 8-0 after a successful two-point conversion.
Holtville's defense pressured Maranatha quarterback Austin Stewart. After repeated duress to Stewart, the Vikings’ defense forced a San Diego fumble which set up a goal-line scenario. With Vikings having great field possession, Iten ran in for another score.
Still early in the game, San Diego continued to lose yardage on several occasions due to a strong Viking defense.
The Vikings' defense stopped a Maranatha offensive drive to end the first quarter.
Holtville started off the second quarter with the continued use of Iten for majority of the drive. Iten continued to run effectively and gained yardage for the home team.
The Vikings, in just a few plays, ended their drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Roger Rolfe followed by a made extra point.
With two-and-a-half minutes left in the first quarter, Maranatha took the kickoff into the Vikings’ territory to the 45-yard line. The Vikings led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Vikings’ defense shut down the Maranatha offense via four-and-out. On the Vikings next possession, Iten ran a 52-yard touchdown dash which increased the Holtville lead.
Maranatha continued to put themselves behind the eight ball with lobs and runs that led to yardage loss and fumbles. Frustration continued to burst from the San Diego sidelines.
Maranatha eventually entered Viking territory with less than a minute to go before halftime. Maranatha settled for a field goal with less than 10 seconds left on the clock. Holtville led 29-3 at half time.
Maranatha reaped no success in their second half opening drive but scored once more before the end of the third quarter.
Entering the final period, the Vikings initiated possession from their own 20 yard-line with a 29-10 lead. After two positive plays, Iten ran in another touchdown from mid-field to increase the Holtville score.
The Vikings' defense held Maranatha to another four-and-out, which set up one more Holtville score from 35 yards out.
Maranatha continued to struggle toward the end of the game and were unable to put up any more points. The Vikings won the contest, 42-10.
