EL CENTRO - The Spartans hosted the Southwest Eagles Friday, October 5 in the Battle of El Centro match up that ended with Central gaining a 46-7 victory over the Eagles.
The Eagles received the ball first, but the Spartans held them in a three and out situation that resulted in a punt back to Central.
On Central's opening drive, quarterback Deniro Osuna led his team down the field for a touchdown with a successful PAT, and the Spartans took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
The Spartans' special teams took the field to kick off to the Eagles for the second time of the evening. On the Eagles drive, their offense ran into a similar three and out situation for another punt back to the Spartans with 2 minutes left in the first quarter.
With the ball on the Spartans own 40-yard line, Osuna jogged to the line of scrimmage to take the snap. After the snap, Osuna stepped back in the pocket and threw the ball that connected with wide receiver Michael Sullivan for a 15 yard gain. On the next play Osuna handed the ball to Joseph Taranto, who rushed the ball to the Eagles’ 33-yard line. To finish off the drive the Spartans’ Osuna handed the ball off to Fernando Morales for a rushing touchdown. After a missed PAT attempt the Spartans took a 13-0 lead to end the first quarter.
To start of the second quarter of play the Spartans kicked off to the Eagles. On the first snap of the drive, the Eagles quarterback Nathan Holguin connect with wide receivers Tristan Smith, who broke away after the catch for a 72 yard touchdown. After the touchdown the Eagles kicked the PAT to bring the score to 13-7.
Moving through the second quarter of play the Spartans managed to stay in control on both sides of the ball to put up 13 additional point, that brought the score to 26-7 going into halftime.
Starting off the third quarter of play the Eagles kicked off to the Spartans who picked up right where they left off.
After marching down the field on the Spartans opening drive of the third quarter, Osuna took a snap and rifled the ball into the hands of Sullivan for a 26 yard pass and touchdown. After another successful PAT by the Spartans, the team took a 33-7 lead over the Eagles.
With the end near, the Spartans kept pushing forward on the tired Eagle defense to put up 13 more point in the third quarter to bring the score to 46-7 to end the quarter.
Headed through the fourth quarter the score remained the same and the Spartans walked away with the title of Champions of El Centro.
With this win the Spartans pushed their record to 7-0 overall with a 2-0 league record. For the Spartans next match up they will travel to Imperial to face off against the Tigers on October 12
On the other side the Eagles will travel to Brawley to face off against the Wildcats to see if they can improve on their 1-1 league record.
