IMPERIAL — The three softball squads remaining in the 2019 San Diego Section CIF playoffs, Brawley, Central, and Southwest were finally taken out in their respected tournaments May 23.
The Lady Wildcats started off the playoff with two shutouts — one over Del Norte 96–0 and one over Southwest E.C. (4–0). In the semi-final bracket, Brawley was on the losing side of 3–0 shutout that came at the hands of San Pasqual in the first wave of games May 23. Since the playoffs were double elimination, the Lady Wildcats were bumped over to face Mission Hills in their second outing of the day to decide who will move on to the championship. The Lady Grizzlies edged out Brawley 3–2 which ended the 2019 season for the Lady Wildcats just one game shy of the title game.
After losing their second-round playoff game to Brawley (4–0), Southwest E.C. regained their offensive rhythm in an 8–5 shootout victory over Patrick Henry. As the Lady Eagles were looking for a potential rematch with Brawley later on down the line, Mission Hills stepped in the way and handed Southwest E.C. their second loss of the playoff, 1–0. With that loss, the Lady Eagle’s CIF Championship title defense in 2019 was cut short.
The Lady Spartans came into their CIF playoff tournament blue-hot with a minimum of seven runs scored in each of their first three outings over Mar Vista 7–2, Coronado 8–3, and then Mar Vista again 8–3. In the finals, Central suffered their first defeat of the playoff in a 3–1 pitcher’s duel. Since both teams had yet to lose, the final came down to a best of three series. Game two came down to extra innings but the Lady Buccaneers held on to the 3–2, eight-inning grudge match.
This season IVL had no CIF champion representatives, but the majority of the league’s squads advanced to the postseason and put forth several quarter- and semi-finalists.
