EL CENTRO — The final week of non-conference volleyball action has passed for the IVL squads where some units have played a boatload of games and are looking fine-tuned for league play, while others only have a few matches under their belts and are scurrying to work the kinks out.
At 10-2, Calexico added two more victories to their record with notable wins over Adelanto on and Twenty-nine Palms in the Salton Sea Invitational September 7. The Lady Bulldogs swept opponents in straight sets at (2-0). Calexico will open conference play September 12 at Holtville High.
Holtville beefed up their record to 6-3 in the final week of non-conference play with two shutout victories. The Lady Vikings blanked Mountain Empire (2-0) and Guajome Park Academy (2-0) on August 31 to take the Bronze Division Championship. Holtville travels to Brawley September 11 to face the Lady Wildcats in week one of IVL action.
Southwest still has a two more non-league games before beginning IVL action September 12 at Palo Verde High. By handing Rancho Mirage the (3-0) goose-egg on September 4, the Lady Eagles evened up their record at 5-5 and will continue their 2019 campaign September 9 at Calipatria.
Imperial ended the week at .500 with a record of 9-9 by adding two W’s to the win-column and dropping one road contest. The Lady Tigers were upended (3-1) by Christian September 3 but bounced back with two consecutive victories over Gila Ridge (3-1) September 5 and Rancho Mirage (3-0) September 7. Imperial will host Central September 10 to commence league play.
Central hosted a pair of Arizona schools during the week with match-ups versus Kofa and Yuma. On September 3, the Lady Spartans were unable to contain Kofa in the 0-3 home loss. Central shook off the cobwebs and came in firing on all cylinders against Yuma September 5 where the Lady Spartans outgunned the Lady Criminals (3-0) to net their first win of the season. Central travels to Imperial September 10 for an IVL faceoff.
Brawley also logged their first win of the season September 7 with a (2-1) victory over Granite Hills. The Lady Wildcats move to 1-6 on the season and will host Holtville in week one of IVL play September 11.
Palo Verde is 0-4 and is slated to commence league play September 12 when the Lady Yellowjackets host Southwest.
