EL CENTRO — As the gridiron giddiness shifts to hardwood heart breakers, Imperial Valley League contenders have already tipped off the 2019-20 basketball preseason.   

Central Union High is currently 1-0 after scorching Coachella Valley November 21 in a 60-28 home blowout. The Spartans will host their second game December 3 versus La Quinta at 7 p.m.

Brawley has had the most active preseason action, of local squads, thus far as the Wildcats have already logged five games and won four. The Wildcats commenced the 2019-20 season with three straight Rancho Mirage Tip off Classic victories over Yucca Valley (69-57), Palo Verde (71-41), Rancho Mirage (88-85), but eventually fell the tournament championship to Victor Valley (79-59). The Wildcats got back in the ‘W’ column November 26 when the B-town boys took out Cathedral City at home 87-71. Brawley will next host Desert Mirage December 3 at 7 p.m.

Calexico is already 2-1 in this young season but has yet to string together two consecutive victories. The Bulldogs routed Desert Mirage (89-35) in their home opener November 19, were taken out by Shadow Hills (86-42) November 21, then bounced back November 26 versus Yuma to crush the Criminals (63-47). Calexico will next take on Rancho Mirage December 12 in the snake pit.

The defending IVL champion Eagles have yet to net a win this season at 0-4.  The Eagles were edged by Morse High in a two-possession deciding contest (51-47) November 21, lost to Torrey Pines (87-20) November 23, fell to Pacific Ridge (58-31), and then were over powered by El Capitan 58-31.
