IMPERIAL — The 2019 CIF volleyball narrative has taken an interesting twist as powerhouses Brawley and Imperial are already out fishing with Calexico and Southwest and the Lady Vikings are the sole remaining postseason IVL representatives.
Brawley and Imperial split the IVL season crown as co-champs with 11-1 divisional records but were both upset in their respected rounds playoff action. The Lady Wildcats lost a CIF Division III San Diego Section win in game two playoff tournament versus San Dieguito with the score 3-2 in Brawley October 28. Two days later, the Lady Tigers were victims of a script flip in Imperial as San Pasqual flew back from two sets down to sweep the ensuing three and upend HIS in five sets 3-2.
The Lady Eagles managed to fight their way into the postseason with a third-place standing in IVL play and a 19-15 overall record. Southwest was slated in the number 16 slot of the CIF Division III San Diego Section playoff and faced number one seeded Mater Dei Catholic October 30 in San Diego where the Lady Crusaders swept the Lady Eagles 3-0 to put a cork on the SHS 2019 volleyball season.
Calexico’s résumé earned their squad a right to advance to the postseason as the number 14 seed in the CIF Division III San Diego Section Playoff in an opening round road match-up versus the three seed High Tech San Diego October 30. The Lady Bulldogs were taken out in straight sets which concluded Calexico’s 2019 season.
The Lady Vikings picked up steam having won five straight matches from mid-October into the current postseason. In the opening round of the CIF Division IV San Diego Section Playoff, 12th-seeded Holtville upset number five seeded Clairemont 3-1 October 29. In the quarter final round, the Lady Vikings faced off against #13-ranked Hoover November 1 in Holtville where the Lady Vikings busted out the broom to pull off a 3-0 sweep. Holtville is next slated to take on a team to be announced November 5 for the Division IV semifinal.
