MEXICALI - Yuniesky Betancourt delivered a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning on November 5 at B’ Air Stadium to give the Mexicali Aguilas the 6-3 victory over the Mazatlan Venados and take the Epoch Series 2-1.
The pitching match-up was listed as Eduardo Vera (Mazatlan) versus David Reyes (Aguilas) heading into the contest.
Goose-eggs defined the first three compete innings of play until Alex Liddi lifted a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the fourth to give the Venados the early 1-0 lead.
Then, in the fifth inning Brian Hernandez batted in Sherman Johnson to push the margin to 2-0 for Mazatlan.
More damage came in the sixth inning for Mexicali when Samar Leyva sent Mazatlan’s second dinger of the game over the fence to make it a 3-0 contest after five and a half innings.
The feathered flyers' responded in their next at-bat with an RBI by Ramon Rios.
In the eighth inning, Ricky Alvarez crushed a two-run bomb, the third homer of the season, to not up the game again at 3-3.
Brawley bred, Jake Sanchez came was summoned in the top of the ninth and mowed down Edson Garcia to get the final out of the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, David Harris got things going with a single to left field. Then, Xorge Carrillo singled to the very same location which brought runners to the corners, and Yuniesky Betancourt finished things off with a three-run walk-off shot.
Sanchez was awarded credit for the win (1-1) and Brandon Cuniff’s record dropped to (0-2) with the loss.
Next, the Aguilas will hit the road to face the Yaquis of Obregon on November 6, 7, and 8.
