CALEXICO – The Calexico Bulldogs hosted the Central Spartans Friday for their fourth game in Imperial Valley League play that ended with a Spartan victory of 48-14.
In the first quarter, the Spartans opened their offense by putting up 13 points, while holding the Bulldogs to zero, and then kicked off the second quarter with a quick touchdown and extra-point, to push the lead to 20-0.
Central kicked off to Calexico late in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs managed to march down the field for a chance at scoring. On a first down, the Bulldogs snapped the ball from the 25-yard line, and quarterback Jorge Villalobos completed a pass to Andy Rojas, who ran for 10 yards into the end zone. With a successful extra point kick, the Bulldogs brought the score to 20-7.
After their successful drive, the Bulldogs kicked off to the Spartans with 2:45 left in the second quarter, and Central completed a drive with a 37-yard run by Jonathan Medina to close out the first half.
Entering third quarter, the Spartans received the ball with an impressive 20-point lead. Starting off the drive, quarterback Deniro Osuna handed the ball off to Thadeo Campbell for an eight-yard run.
On the next play, Osuna gave the ball to Angel Nava-Esparza, who picked up a big gain and first down for the Spartans. Central’s Osuna moved on to complete a pass to Campbell for a 43-yard touchdown pass. With a good extra point kick, the score moved up to 34-7 for Central.
The Spartans gained two more touchdowns in the third quarter by Medina and Osuna to bring the score to 48-7, and with time running out in the quarter, the Bulldogs earned one touchdown to push the score to 48-14.
The entire fourth quarter remained scoreless, and the Spartans walked away with the win.
For the final week of play, Central will face the Wildcats in the traditional Bell Game at home in Cal Jones Stadium, while the Bulldogs will travel to El Centro to face off against the undefeated Southwest Eagles.
