Sheriff Department to get new boating equipment

EL CENTRO — New boats, boating supplies, and vehicles will be added to the Imperial County Sheriff’s inventory after receiving a grant of $253,866 from California’s Boating and Waterways program for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

The grant will allow the Sheriff’s Department to police the various waterways of the Imperial Valley, from the Colorado River to the Salton Sea. The office will enforce boating laws, respond to boating-related emergencies, and promote safe boating and the distribution of boating safety literature.

Sheriff Ray Loera said that no money from the General Fund will be used; all funding will be from the grant.
