(September 5, 2012. Brawley) The Brawley City Counsel honored Sheila Riley for her heroic efforts by jumping into the Central Main Canal to rescue a lady whose car had gone into the canal on July 30, 2012.

Jay Kruger with the Brawley Public Safety Committee presented a certificate of recognition to Riley.

Council Member Ryan Kelley said, “The idea behind this is to promote citizenship in our community. I’d like to see us establish a Medal of Citizenship to recognize someone in our community who did something nice for someone else.”

Riley received a bouquet of flowers from the City.

A representative from the office of Assembly Member Manuel Perez presented Riley with a Certificate of Appreciation from the State Assembly.

“Thank you very much,” said Riley. “I didn’t expect this at all. I just hope that if anybody was in this situation they would do the same thing. I really appreciate it.”
