Pedestrian fatality north of Brandt Road


(Brawley, CA) On Friday, September 21, shortly after 7 pm, El Centro Area CHP dispatch was advised of a collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 86 near Brandt Road.

 Units responded and confirmed the collision to involve a pedestrian who had sustained obviously fatal injuries.  Alan Cully,  the72 year old driver of the 1995 Buick Regal was located on scene and uninjured.

 The #2 northbound lane of 86 was closed for approximately 2 hours to facilitate the collision investigation.  The pedestrian was tentatively identified and is believed to be a transient of the Imperial Valley as well as the Barstow area. 

Cully was driving in the no. 2 northbound lane just north of Brandt Road at a stated speed of 40-50 miles per hour.  The driver suddenly observed a person standing directly within the #2 lane wearing dark clothing.  The vehicle impacted the pedestrian prior to the driver having the ability to slow or take evasive action.

 This collision is currently under investigation.
