Ramona Montoya Reyes
February 21, 1928 - July 6, 2020
On Monday, July 6, Ramona Montoya Reyes passed away quietly in Brawley, CA. She passed over to the eternal dance, where her husband, Max H. Reyes, took her hand and danced to “Gema” that her brothers, Edward (Eddie), Ramon (Yuni) and Robert (Bobby) played with their guitars. Her sister, Rosie (Chayito) was excited to see her sister and was waiting to sing to Ramona “Tu Solo Tu” with her brothers. In his corner waiting to greet Ramona was her father, the Pacific Coast Bantamweight Champ, Ramon Montoya, and her mother, Jesse Villegas Montoya, the greatest story teller in the family.
Ramona was born in Brawley on February 21, 1928. She was the first born of a family of three boys and five girls. She attended school and graduated from Miguel Hidalgo School in Brawley in 1944. She was Cinco De Mayo Queen of the Mutualista Sociedad Miguel Hidalgo (Hidalgo Society, Inc. now, where she is an honorary member) of Brawley in 1948 and 1949.
On May 15,1949 she married the late Max H. Reyes. They had three children, Barbara R. Loera, Max M. Reyes and Eric M. Reyes. Ramona loved to dance and enjoyed many dances, parties and fiestas with her husband, family and friends, especially the “Golden Girls”. As much as she enjoyed having fun, she also was a tough negotiator for her Union, Western Growers Local 78, in the carrot packing shed. She made the most of her 92 years of life, living it to the fullest.
Ramona is survived by her daughter, Barbara R. Loera; her sons, Max M. Reyes and Eric M. Reyes; her son-in-law, Ray Loera; grandchild Rocky (Aidee); great-grandchildren, Sophia, Luke and Zooey; grandchild, Candice Ortiz (Chendo); great-grandchildren, Austin, Alana Layla and Cianna; daughter-in-law Lupe V. Reyes; grandchild, Max Joaquin (Cyria); great-grandchildren, Max Anthony, Joaquin James (JJ) and Marcus; grandchild, Myra Loya (Sergio); great-grandchildren, Sergio Jr., Mia, Mya, Mariah, Malia and Mila; and grandchild, America Reyes. She is also survived by daughter-in-law, Teresa J. Reyes; grandchildren Eric Reyes Jr, Andrea Reyes and Vanessa R. Cronin (Ryan); great-grandchild Isabella; as well as daughter/niece Gloria Montoya; sisters, Jesse (Tuti) Ramos (Chon), Mary Ortiz and Rachel Razo (Alex); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Due to the COVID-19 virus it will be a private viewing and funeral. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled after it is safe to arrange one. The family would like to send a special thank you to the family and friends who helped in Ramona’s last years and Imperial Heights Healthcare and Wellness Center entire staff of doctors, therapists, nurses, assistant nurses, administrators and support staff for their kind and conscientious care.
