Joe “Choco” Cortez 

February 20, 1939 - October 31, 2019

Joe, 80, was born in Brawley February 20, 1939. He served in the Brawley California National Guard from 1957-1959, Unit 134B at Camp Roberts. 

He was a farm laborer most of his life until his retirement. He will always be remembered as a “True Brawley Wildcat Fan” #1 Blue and Gold.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Antonia and Jose Cortez, and his brother, Manuel Lopez.

Joe is survived by his sister, Socorro Cornejo of Imperial, his brother, Henry (Carmen) Cortez of Brawley, and his sister, Lupe (Mike) Cortez of Brawley. He is also survived by his nieces, Toni Carrillo, Monica Alcantar, Dayna Lopez, Angela Cortez, Toni Gastelum, and Ramona Gonzales; his nephews, Freddy Cornejo, Paul Cortez, Larry Lopez, Lupe Lopez, Manuel Lopez, Bobby, Mike, Rudy, and Ruben Morales.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley with the rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, November 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brawley. The burial will be private.
