Carra Harwell

December 24, 1931 – June 2, 2019

Carra Harwell passed away from age-related causes June 2, 2019. She was 87.

Carra was born to James and Ruth Parsons on Christmas Eve, 1931, in Montrose, Colorado.

By a previous marriage she had four children whom she adored, Steven, Richard, Randall, and Cathleen Benedict.

Carra moved to Brawley in 1965. She married Ray Harwell in 1976. Together they enjoyed traveling and spending time on their boat “Ceres” in San Diego. On more than one occasion they flew cross-country and into Mexico on Ray’s plane with Carra as the anxious co-pilot. They were together for thirty-seven years until Ray’s passing in 2013.

Carra attended night school at the Imperial Valley campus of San Diego State, graduating with a bachelor’s degree on the same day her eldest son graduated from high school. She went on to become a school teacher. She was a member of the Brawley Women’s Club, the Women’s Auxiliary of Pioneer Memorial Hospital, the Stockmen’s Club and Southwestern Yacht Club in San Diego. She adored her grandchildren, loved cooking for the family, adopted many stray cats and dogs over the years, and could always be counted on to play bridge.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ray, her daughter Cathleen Yeager, her brother James Parsons, and her niece, Julie Laos.

Carra is survived by sons Steven (Jean), Richard (Mardi) and Randall (Pat) Benedict; step-daughter Sherry O’Malley; granddaughters Margaret, Katherine, and Sara Benedict, Heather Jiggins, Holly Johnso,n and Shevaun O’Malley King, great-grandchildren Madeline and Charlotte Jiggins and Piper Johnson, sister-in-law Carolyn Parsons and nephew James Parsons.

A memorial service will be held at Frye’s Chapel in Brawley on June 22 at 11 a.m.
