Firefighters from across Imperial County mop up residential fire

NILAND – While fighting a three alarm fire of a warehouse and strip mall in Calexico, Thursday evening, the Imperial County Fire Department received a second call of another large fire three miles east of Niland.

Niland, part of the Imperial County Fire Department’s jurisdiction, has one fire engine and it was at that moment out on a medical aid call. Because an ambulance had arrived at the medical scene, the Niland fire engine was cleared from that call and sent to the fire.

They found an inhabitated structure with trailers connected to the building on fire, with the trees surrounding the buildings engulfed in flames. The local fireman called in a three alarm fire, summoning engines from across the valley.

The fireman found the residents scrambling to remove personal items from their home.

Brawley, Westmorland, Holtville, and Calipatria engines joined Niland and Imperial County in the fight.

Assistant Fire Chief Rob Scott said that once engaged the fire was out within thirty minutes.

Scott said he then cleared the other fire engines from the fire.

According to Scott, they will not know until their investigation starting Friday morning the cause of the fire.
