YUMA — Yuma Sector Border Patrol emergency medical technicians assisted DPS troopers with a fatal wrong-way vehicle collision, along Interstate 8 east of the Mohawk Mountains, May 17.

The USBP press release said DPS notified Wellton Border Patrol agents of a vehicle driving the wrong way on Interstate 8 near mile marker 58, which is east of the Mohawk Mountains. Agents responding to the area encountered a two-vehicle, head-on collision near mile marker 62 on the interstate’s westbound lanes.

According to the release, two certified EMT Border Patrol agents provided lifesaving first aid prior to the arrival of additional medical services to an off-duty EMS worker.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was deceased on scene and a Careflight medical helicopter flew one subject to the hospital. The release said agents remained at the location to assist DPS with traffic control.
