EL CENTRO — A suicide attempt was made on Interstate 8 Saturday morning, September 14, just before 10 a.m. According to a CHP report, a Mr. Hernandez was driving west on I-8 at 55 miles per hour in the slow lane and noticed a male juvenile pedestrian standing on the north shoulder of the road, who then began walking into oncoming traffic, specifically, the slow lane.
Hernandez took account of the young man’s actions and started to move into the fast lane, trying to create a safer distance between his car and the pedestrian, but the young male suddenly jumped into his lane. Hernandez reacted by quickly turning his wheels to the left in an attempt to move his vehicle into the next lane. However, the male continued running toward the vehicle and subsequently struck the right side of the trailer in tow.
Medical personnel were called, arrived on the scene and attended to the juvenile’s injuries. Air ambulance Reach was requested and the young man was flown out to Desert Hospital with major injuries to his lower body.
At the scene, the juvenile made several comments to those administering aid to him about wanting to end his life and he said his actions were intentional.
As of this reporting, no further word on the youth’s injuries have been given.
