EL CENTRO — December 5, at approximately 5:23 p.m., an 82-year-old woman from Holtville was driving a 2017 Toyota northbound in the southbound lanes of State Route 111 from Evan Hewes Highway. The California Highway Patrol received multiple calls in a short span of time via 9-1-1 before receiving reports of a collision. The Toyota collided head on with a 2003 Ford truck, being driven out of Brawley, in the number one lane of State Route 111 just south of Aten Road. CHP units were on scene of the collision minutes after, as they were responding to the wrong way driver in the area.

Responding units found the Toyota in the center median of State Route 111 and the Ford on the right shoulder. Officers contacted both drivers and attempted life saving measures on the 82-year-old female, who subsequently succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Ford is believed to have suffered a fractured right leg because of this collision. Both parties were transported to ECRMC by AMR ambulance.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts and impairment does not appear to be a factor in this collision. The name of the deceased has been withheld pending notification of family. This collision remains under investigation.
