A male resident from Campo, California — Detron Williams, 41 — was driving a 2005 Lincoln east on Highway 98 east of Holdridge Rd., at an unknown speed Monday, May 3, around noon. A Calexico driver of a 2002 Pontiac was driving west on the same highway east of Holdridge Rd., also at an unknown speed.
For reasons still under investigation, Williams allowed the Lincoln to drift to the left into the westbound lane of Highway 98. Williams and the driver of the Pontiac both attempted to take evasive action to avoid the collision but were unable to successfully do so. Subsequently, both vehicles collided head on. After the initial impact, the Lincoln overturned.
As a result of the collision, the 83-year-old male driver of the Pontiac sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the collision scene at approximately 12:34 p.m. by Holtville Firefighter M. Flores. Williams sustained minor injuries and was not transported. Williams' female passenger, 23-year-old Mistie Upchurch, sustained major injuries to her left leg and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center via REACH air ambulance.
The collision remains under investigation. Impairment was reportedly not a factor in this collision.
