CALEXICO — U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested a Sureño gang member Saturday, August 24, said a news release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
According to the release, at approximately 2:40 p.m., agents were on patrol when they observed a man illegally enter the United States about 12 miles east of the Calexico Port of Entry.
The release said that agents arrested the man and transported him to the El Centro Station for processing.
At the station, record checks revealed the man was previously charged and convicted for shooting at an inhabited dwelling. The man received a 10-year prison sentence in California for his crimes. He also admitted to being a member of the notorious Sureños gang, per the report.
Additionally, the release said that agents determined that he was previously removed from the United States in 2014.
The report said the man, a 35-year-old Mexican national, is in federal custody pending prosecution for federal crimes.
