EL CENTRO - The County of Imperial Planning and Development Services conducted a public lottery for commercial cannabis activity licenses April 20, 2018 in the Imperial County Board of Supervisors' chambers. The public lottery was conducted by Jim Minick, Imperial County Planning and Development Services Director.
With the passing of Proposition 64, the California Marijuana Legalization Initiative, cities throughout the state of California have new regulations to consider. It was decided Imperial County would open five wholesale distribution licenses, five virtual retail licenses, and one physical medicinal license.
The County received 23 applicants for the licenses, and all met the minimum requirements for licensure. Because of the surplus of qualified applicants, a public lottery was held for all categories of licenses.
The physical medicinal license was awarded to Movocan, which will be located in Seeley.
The five applicants awarded licenses for wholesale distribution are Gateway Distribution, Southwest Releaf LLC, Moulton Holding Inc, and Imperial Gold LLC with two licenses.
The five Virtual Retail licenses were awarded to Gateway Delivery, Valley Green Rush Inc, Green Rush Delivery, Paragon West LLC, and Movocan.
According to the Imperial County Planning and Development Services, lottery winners are not guaranteed a license and must meet all other requirements established in the Imperial County Codified Ordinances. If any lottery winners are unable to obtain the license, the County will hold another public lottery to determine the replacement.
