YUMA — Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents working near the Morelos Dam rescued a Honduran father and son from after they were swept away in a canal July 17, according to a recent USBP press release.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., agents observed a father and son enter the Salinity Canal near County 8½ Street and the Levee Road near Yuma, according to the report.

Agents noticed the pair were struggling as the current was quickly taking them downstream. Agents deployed a rescue disc but were unable to make connection. Agents instructed the father to grab on to a nearby bush and hand the child over to agents. He complied and agents pulled the child to safety. Agents assisted the father in exiting the canal shortly after, per the report.

Neither subject complained of any injuries but were transported to a medical center out of caution. The father was diagnosed with acute respiratory distress as a result of the incident and received treatment. The report said he was later released from the hospital.

Both subjects were processed for immigration violations, per the report.
