Michael E. Werve
July 22, 1953 – November 16, 2014
Michael E. “Mick†Werve, 61, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Sunday afternoon, November 16, 2014 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.
Mick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Strong and humble, he was an anchor for his family, who will miss him beyond measure. As a friend, his generosity seemed without limit, giving of time, labor and other resources, but most importantly of himself.
Mick was a committed follower of Christ, cared deeply about the church, and shared his love and respect of Scripture by studying, teaching and living it.
Mick had a wide range of interests, which always gave him something interesting to talk about. These included hiking, rock climbing, photography and blogging. He tinkered with a few inventions. A student of the Civil War, he traveled to battlefields, photographed them and wrote about them. He was an urban farmer who never gave up on keeping the dogs away from the chickens. He built, repaired and remodeled. He was always there to help.
Mick was born on July 22, 1953 in Brawley, California, the son of the late Eugene V. and Lorna R. (Ralphs) Werve. He was raised and received his education in the Calipatria, California, graduating with the Calipatria High School Class of 1971.
In his earlier years, he worked in a welding shop with his father in Calipatria, California for several years. Following his graduation he attended Imperial Valley College as well as Chico State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Technology. From 1973 to 1977 he served as a Hull Technician in the US Navy.
He was united in marriage to Carol E. Brecheisen on January 11, 1975 in San Diego, California. Following their marriage they made their home in the Modesto, California. Mick worked as a Mechanical Technologist for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, for twenty years retiring at the age of fifty-two. In 2006 they moved to Forest Grove, where they have lived happily since.
He attended St. Bede’s Episcopal Church and Sonrise Church, both in Forest Grove.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene V. and Lorna R. Werve.
Survivors include his wife, Carol E. Werve; his son, Peter Werve, of Portland, Oregon; his daughter, Jama Kelch, of Forest Grove; his sister, Diane Booy, of San Jacinto, California; and Carol’s sister, Marilyn Brecheisen.
Also surviving are his three grandchildren, Gypsy Sky Werve, Gavin Alexander Kelch and Audrey Lynn Kelch and beloved nieces and nephews.
The family suggests that remembrances be made to the American Red Cross-Oregon Trail Chapter, PO Box 3200, Portland, Oregon 97208, in his memory.
