Report of reckless driving leads to seizure of firearms

EL CENTRO — Officers were dispatched to a reckless driver call on 4th Street near Ross Avenue Friday, February 19, at 3:18 p.m., according to a press release.

The caller reported a black Lincoln Navigator was swerving and causing a hazard in the area. Responding officers located a black Lincoln Navigator in the area and contacted the driver after noticing the vehicle’s registration expired in December of 2019. While speaking with the driver, officers saw a knife on his person and found a firearm in plain view on the front passenger seat. Officers arrested the driver, Luis Juarez Orozco — a 29-year-old resident of El Centro — after finding drug paraphernalia and the firearm. A records check indicated the Beretta handgun was one of two firearms stolen from a residence in 2020.

Detectives were contacted and informed of the events regarding the recovery of the stolen firearm. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Orozco’s residence in El Centro and located three additional firearms.

Juarez Orozco was booked at the Imperial County Jail for carrying a loaded weapon, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. ECPD encourages anyone with information about the investigation to call El Centro Detective Alfredo Hernandez at (760) 335-4674 or the Detective Bureau at (760) 337-4502.
