IMPERIAL VALLEY COLLEGE – Imperial Valley College President Victor Jaime addresses family and friends during Monday’s designation of Room 2732 as E. J. “Pete” Mellinger Hall. The Room, which is located in the 2700 classroom building, houses agriculture classes.

Mellinger was on the faculty of IVC from 1961 until his retirement in 1989 and founded the agriculture department at IVC. He also worked with his students to provide the original landscaping at the IVC Aten Road campus when it opened in 1962.

Mellinger was Holtville’s “Citizen of the Year” in 2007 and served the City of Holtville in a number of elected and appointed positions continuously from 1973 until his death in July at the age of 92. That included service as a planning commissioner, city council member and city treasurer.

  1. I am happy to learn of the establishment of the Pete Mellinger Hall. I attended IVC in the mid-’70s for my freshman year of college. Taking classes taught by Mellinger and those from the agricultural industry that he recruited to teach specialty classes gave me a good foundation for going on the next year to a 4 year school and earning an agribusiness degree. One year, but I feel indebted to him for the start in formal agricultural education.
