IID modifies attic insulation rebate program to benefit more customers

IID front yardEL CENTRO –  In an effort to extend energy savings benefits to more Imperial Irrigation District customers, the IID Board of Directors, Tuesday, approved modifications to the district’s attic insulation Energy Rewards Program.

Under the changes, homes can now have existing attic insulation rated R-19 or less and qualify for the rebate program (the previous maximum was R-11*). Additionally, the board eliminated the year of construction requirement (initially, homes constructed after 1978 qualified for a lesser rebate).

The updated attic insulation rebate provides an incentive of 60 cents per square foot. To earn the rebate, the existing attic insulation in the home must be less than or equal to R-19 and replaced with insulation with a minimum efficiency level of R-38.

“The attic insulation rebate program has been widely successful,” said Sabrina Barber, assistant energy manager. “We encourage more energy consumers to take advantage of these incentives. A more energy-efficient home will save money in lower electric bills and help reduce the demand on the overall electric system, which benefits everyone.”

The incentives offered through the Energy Rewards Program are funded by the mandated public benefits charge, which is collected on all energy bills. IID’s 2013 budget for the Energy Rewards Program totals $1.6 million, of which $1 million has been allocated for attic insulation rebates.
