EL CENTRO — The Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee will partner with the Vo Medical Center to host a free COVID-19 vaccination clinic for individuals ages 55 and older on Saturday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sweet Home Baptist Church, 120 E. Holt Ave. in El Centro.

According to the press release, the event is part of the Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee’s Protect Our Community Project (POCP), which aims to address health disparities in underserved communities, and specifically the local African American population.

The POCP will partner with 13 African American churches in the Valley to educate the public about COVID-19 and health disparities that the African American population has historically suffered from.

The POCP is made possible through a Health Equity and Action for Latinos (HEAL) grant administered by Comite Civico del Valle through its partnership with the California Endowment, the California Wellness Foundation, and the Latino Community Foundation.

Local representatives from Catholic Charities, Valley Weight Loss, California Rural Legal Assistance, Imperial County Behavioral Health Services, Imperial Valley Housing Authority, and the El Centro Public Library are scheduled to be on-hand during the event.

Free health screenings related to dentistry, blood pressure, and dialysis will be available for attendees. Free hand sanitizer, face masks, and prizes will be made available as well.

The Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee is a local nonprofit that was founded in 2014 to address issues of social justice and equality in Imperial County.
