Fatal Valentine’s Day Collision on Highway 78

THe-BEATEL CENTRO- On Valentine’s Day at 12:09, a 62-year-old man from Lake Havasu City, Arizona, was driving his 1997 Hyundai Elantra down Highway 78 approximately two miles east of Butters Road at an undetermined speed.

For unknown reasons, the driver allowed his vehicle to travel off the south edge of the highway and onto the dirt shoulder in a southeasterly direction.  The driver over-corrected by making an unsafe left turn, causing the vehicle to travel across 78 in a northeasterly direction.  He then attempted to regain control and tried to make a right turn.  The vehicle instead drove off the south edge of a 12 inch deep drain ditch north of 78 where it overturned.  The Hyundai came to a rest at the bottom of the drain ditch in approximately one foot of water and mud.

Brawley Fire Dept, Gold Cross ambulance, Imperial County Sheriffs, and CHP officers were on the scene to treat the man for severe injuries.

The driver was transported by Gold Cross to Pioneers Memorial Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.  The incident is currently under investigation.
