EL CENTRO – A structure fire on State Street in El Centro was reported at just before 6:40 Monday morning. A second alarm went out at 6:50 a.m.

The fire was on State Street, between 4th and 5th Streets, across from the Greyhound Bus Station. Several fire departments, including Brawley and Calexico, were on scene with El Centro Fire.

The fire was in the abandoned apartments next to the Roberta Hotel. At last word no injuries were reported. Fire crews were still on scene at 8:00 am trying to keep the fire from spreading to the Hotel. The cause of the fire will be investigated.

There was no electricity to the abandoned apartments. Transients speculate that there may have been people inside with candles or trying to cook food. They say they believed everyone was able to get out of the structures. Officials say all the Cottage structures were destroyed.
