DKN: Calves

Did you know that baby cows are called calves? Calves weigh about 60 to 100 pounds when they’re born. Within an hour of birth, they can already stand and walk!
Our farmers and ranchers are responsible for growing and raising a lot of different things, including vegetables, fruits, and cows. Then, they sell those items to your family and families across the country. The items they sell are called commodities.
In Imperial County, cows are the highest commodity. Our farmers and ranchers sell more cows than any other product they grow.
Some calves are raised for their milk and to have more babies. Other calves are raised to sell to market to feed our families. Either way, our ranchers make sure the calves are clean, happy, and healthy.
Next time you see a rancher or farmer, remember to thank them for their hard work and dedication!
