Busy Border Patrol arrest another dangerous gang member and confiscate $5 Million in drugs

El Centro, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico station apprehended a member of the “Surenos 13 Gang” today during patrol operations.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested Jose Ismael Herrera-Rodriguez, a 26-year-old Mexican national who crossed into the United States illegally nine miles west of the Calexico West Port of Entry. Border Patrol agents later determined that the subject is a member of the “Surenos 13 Gang” a criminal organization out of Santa Barbara, Calif. Upon further investigation, agents discovered Herrera has a criminal history and had been previously removed from the United States.

Herrera is in Border Patrol custody and facing removal proceedings.

 CBP Officers in Otay Mesa Find Weapons, $5.4 Million in Methamphetamine and Cocaine

Otay Mesa – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Otay Mesa and San Ysidro ports of entry in California during the last two days discovered $4.2 million worth of methamphetamine, $1.2 million worth of cocaine, and two weapons.

On July 1, at about 10:30 a.m. at the Otay Mesa port of entry, CBP officers encountered a 45-year-old female Mexican citizen when he entered the port driving a Mazda Tribute. A CBP officer escorted the woman and vehicle to the port’s imaging system, revealing anomalies in the doors of the vehicle.


Officers searched the vehicle and discovered 161 wrapped packages of methamphetamine and two packages of cocaine in the vehicle’s doors, quarter panels, floor, and air duct. The total weight of the narcotic was 209 pounds of methamphetamine and four pounds of cocaine, valued at $4.2 million.


The driver was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. CBP seized the narcotic and vehicle.


On July 2, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a 25-year-old male U.S. citizen drove a commercial minivan through the bus lane at the San Ysidro border crossing for inspection. During the inspection, a CBP canine alerted to the gas tank area of the minivan, so the driver and conveyance were escorted for a more in-depth investigation.


CBP officers searched the driver and found a pocket knife, a 22 caliber pistol, and a magazine with eight rounds, on the driver.


CBP officers also ran the minivan through the ports imaging system revealing anomalies with the gas tank. Officers subsequently discovered 23 wrapped packages of cocaine from the gas tank weighing 102 pounds, with a street value of $1.2 million.


The driver was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. CBP seized the cocaine, weapons and conveyance.
