Border Patrol Finds Narcotics Concealed in Vehicle

6-29-15 elc naroticsSALTON CITY – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Highway 86 checkpoint arrested a man suspected of drug smuggling after discovering more than $700,000 worth of heroin and cocaine were discovered in his vehicle on Saturday.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m., when Border Patrol agents encountered the driver of a 2002 Jeep Wrangler at the checkpoint.

A Border Patrol canine detection team alerted to the vehicle and agents referred the driver to secondary for further investigation.  After an intensive search agents discovered a false compartment located underneath the cargo area of the vehicle.  The compartment contained 20 packages of heroin and cocaine.

The heroin had a combined weight of 15.8 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $189,000.  The cocaine had a combined weight of 32.7 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $523,000.

The man, a 21-year-old United States citizen, the vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.

Last fiscal year, El Centro Sector seized more than 186 pounds of heroin and 148 pounds of cocaine.


Border Patrol Rescues Man Stuck in Trunk

CALEXICO – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station rescued an undocumented alien from the trunk of a vehicle in downtown Calexico on Sunday.

The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m., when Border Patrol agents searched for a man that earlier made an illegal entry.  An unidentified male approached the south side of the border fence and informed agents that a man was inside the trunk of a 1994 Honda Prelude parked near the 700 block of E. Second Street.

Agents approached the car and knocked on the trunk of the car to verify if there was anyone inside.  The agents heard a faint voice emitted from the trunk ask for help.  Border Patrol agents called the Calexico Fire Department for assistance.  While the fire department was en route, the agents broke the car’s window and triggered the trunk release latch and extracted a 22-year-old Mexican man

Agents rendered aid to the man until emergency medical services arrived.

The man was treated for heat exhaustion and refused any further medical treatment.

The man was taken to the Calexico Border Patrol Station for processing and later returned to Mexico.

The vehicle was seized for alien smuggling.

Last fiscal year, El Centro Sector  had 14,511 apprehensions.
