CALEXICO â€“ El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents on Saturday, January 16, arrested a previously deported gang member and a man suspected of methamphetamine smuggling.
At approximately 5:00 A.M., U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station were on routine patrol when then apprehended a man attempting to enter the U.S. illegally about half a mile east of the Calexico port of entry.
Agents transported the man to the Calexico Border Patrol station for processing.Â There, agents identified the man as Luis Armando Barrera Espinoza.Â Agents also discovered Barrera was a member of the notorious â€œSureÃ±oâ€ criminal gang.
The man, a 27-year-old citizen of El Salvador, is in Border Patrol custody and will be further processed for his illegal entry into the United States.
Later on Saturday, at approximately 1:00 P.M., a 26-year-old man approached the Highway 86 checkpoint driving a 2007 grey Honda Civic.
A Border Patrol detection canine alerted to the vehicle.Â Agents referred the man to the secondary inspection area for a closer examination.Â After an intensive search, agents discovered six vacuum sealed bundles of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicleâ€™s rocker panels.
The methamphetamine had a combined weight of 43.3 pounds with an estimated street value of $433,000.
The man, a Mexican citizen, the vehicle, and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
From October 1, 2014 through August 31, 2015, El Centro SectorÂ had 14,511 apprehensions and seized more than 445 pounds of methamphetamine.
