Seniors in the Imperial Valley will find it easier to maintain their fitness level through the SilverSneakers Fitness Program now available.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program was founded in 1992 by Mary Swanson with the goals of improving thephysical, mental, and emotional health of older Americans. Since that time, SilverSneakers has become a nationwide network with more than 13,000 participating fitness and wellness facilities that serve more than 12 million eligible members. In Imperial Valley, the participating fitness and wellness facilities in the SilverSneakers Fitness program include Snap Fitness in El Centro and Brawley, Fitness Oasis Health Club and Spa, FLX Fitness, U.S. Fitness, and IV Fitness Club.

At what age are you eligible for SilverSneakers? The SilverSneakers Fitness Program is for BabyBoomers age 65 and older. SilverSneakers offers a diverse range of classes from low impact to high intensity, tailored to meet the individual fitness goals of participants. Classes include yoga, weight training, Latin dance, aqua-aerobics and dozens of others, each uniquely designed and taught by certified instructors.

This program offers a variety of fitness and social benefits to participants, and in many cases, a SilverSneakers membership can be free to the participant through several Medicare Advantage programs that may offer it as a benefit.

How does SilverSneakers work? SilverSneakers Fitness has a multi-faceted approach to providing senior fitness services. Through partnerships with healthcare providers, nationally recognized fitness centers, locally owned gyms and community locations across the nation, participants can access classes in more than 13,000 locations. This level of convenience removes one of the major barriers that seniors often face trying to achieve their fitness goals. Since each participant has a unique fitness goal coupled with their own physical limitations and challenges, SilverSneakers offers a wide variety of classes. Participants can focus on mobility with yoga and flex classes, low-impact movement classes to improve cardio fitness, or stability classes that strengthen ankle, knee and hip joints, lessening the chances that a person might suffer a devastating fall.
