Do you know an “ordinary” person with extraordinary courage? Someone who has saved a life, helped a neighbor in need or made a difference in their community? If you know a local hero, the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties asks you to nominate them for the 17th Annual Real Heroes Awards

“There are unsung heroes all around us and we are seeking nominations from the public to discover and honor them as Real Heroes in our community,” said Sean Mahoney regional CEO of the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties in the Red Cross press release. “It can be a colleague, family member, neighbor or friend who performed a selfless act of bravery or improves their community through humanitarian service every day. We want to recognize ordinary people with extraordinary courage right here in San Diego and Imperial Counties.”

The report said the annual Red Cross Real Heroes Awards Breakfast honors those making an impact through their brave and compassionate actions, demonstrating a true commitment to creating safer, stronger communities.

Since the event’s inception, more than 100 heroes have been honored according to the release. Watch the inspirational stories of previous honorees athttp://www.youtube.com/SDICRedCross.

Honorees will be celebrated across nine categories: Animal Welfare, Community Partner, Fire & Rescue, Gift of Life, Good Samaritan, Youth Good Samaritan, Humanitarian, Law Enforcement and Military. New this year, the Gift of Life award is awarded to an individual or group that gives blood or platelet donations. Gift of Life can also honor someone who may not donate themselves, but inspires others to give blood or platelet donations, per the report. For complete category descriptions, visit redcross.org/sandiego/realheroes.

The report said heroes are nominated by the public and are chosen by an awards selection committee comprising local community leaders and event sponsors. Honorees are selected based on the degree to which their actions uphold the values of the Red Cross humanitarian mission and leave a lasting and positive impact on the community.

This year’s Real Heroes award recipients will be honored at the event Friday, October 11, aboard the U.S.S. Midway Museum.
