Accident caused by DUI


(CALEXICO) – On Wednesday, September 12, a call went out to the California Highway Patrol dispatch that a traffic accident had occurred on a dirt road, near Meadows Rd., south of Jasper Road. 

According to the CHP, Paulina Guerrero, 21 from Calexico, was driving her 1995 Ford Taurus southbound on the dirt road at a high rate of speed. As Guerrero traveled up the canal embankment, she jumped over the canal access road and collided into the opposite canal bank.

The rear part of the Taurus went into the canal, but the front end was able to stay on the dirt.

Guerrero was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center by ambulance with a broken leg and multiple abrasions.  She was also arrested for driving under the influence.

Their was a passenger in the Taurus, Robin Zamudio, 41 of Calexico. She suffered minor abrasions and was not taken to the hospital.

Investigating officer Centeno says the incident is still under investigation.

Fatality  on 86


(SALTON CITY) – Wednesday, September 12, at 6 a.m. , Barry Paul Smith, 57 of Thermal, CA, was driving his 1998 VW Beetle 65 mph southbound on Highway 86 near Treadwell Blvd.


At this location there was a 2005 Peterbuilt Tractor with a flat bed trailer parked on the shoulder area due to Mechanical problems. The big rig had been broken down for over an hour and had placed 3 orange reflective triangles to the rear of his vehicle.


Smith approached the Peterbuilt, traveled into the right shoulder and drove into the rear of the flat bed trailer.


Smith was killed immediately by blunt force trauma according to the Imperial County Coroner.


Investigating officer Gonzalez said the accident is still under investigation.
