Fatality Friday on Highway 111 & 78

BRAWLEY — On Friday, around 4:20 p.m., Adrian Cano, 57, of Calexico, was driving his 2006 Chevrolet Silverado south on Highway 111, just north of Highway 78, when they stopped for a red light at the intersection.

Another driver, who died later at the hospital, from Yuma, AZ, 48, driving in his 2008 Silverado stopped directly behind Cano at the same stoplight.

Armando Contreras, 59, of Yuma, AZ, approached the light in his 2009 International, going 55 m.p.h. Contreras failed to stop for the red light, causing the front of his International to collide with the rear of the deceased from Yuma. The impact of Contreras caused the middle Silverado to launch into Cano’s Chevrolet.

The Yuma man in the Silverado was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital and later succumbed to his injuries. His passenger, a 46 year-old Yuma woman, was taken to Desert Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

Adrian Cano was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital along with his passenger, Beatriz Cano, 56, Calexico, both with minor injuries.

Armando Contreras also was taken to PMH with minor injuries.

According to Investigating Officer Fowler, the accident remains under investigation.
