IMPERIAL COUNTY – On July 14, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a woman who allegedly withdrew thousands of dollars from a GoFundMe belonging to a 3-year-old battling cancer.

According to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) press release, Leah M. Puyot, 33, allegedly withdrew approximately $11,500 from the account that was created to help pay for medical bills for the 3-year-old.

Deputies say ICOE was made aware of Puyot’s alleged embezzlement by one of the parents when the child died in January. Deputies say the ongoing investigation revealed Puyot was the sole administrator of the account and the only person with access to the funds.

Puyot was arrested and booked into the Imperial County Jail, and has been charged with grand theft with bail set at $5,000.
