BRAWLEY – The Brawley Wildcat’s baseball team hosted the Holtville Vikings Friday, May 13, in conference play, where Brawley won in extra innings, 2-1.
The battle slow-started with both sides struggling to find their bats. It wasn’t till the sixth inning the Wildcat’s Roberto Brodell (8) hit a hard line drive in the right field gap for an RBI single to score A.J. Grijalva (14) for the first run of the game. For six innings the Vikings struggled unsuccessfully to score until Rafael Lopez (15) started off the seventh with an infield single that started a rally. Next to the plate, Luke Hernandez (1) hit a game saving hit to second base that allowed teammate Rafael Lopez (15) to score to tie up the game in the last inning.
Brawley failing to score in the bottom of the seventh pushed the game into extra innings. With the score still tied up late in the game, Brawley’s A.J. Grijalva hit a towering fly ball on the left field line for a walk off double, bringing the final score of the game two to one.
“I came up to the plate looking for that first pitch fastball and that is what I got,” says A.J. Grijalva, “I also I felt like we played as a team that really helped us out for upcoming CIF.”
The low-scoring game brought the spotlight to the pitchers. Finishing the game, Brawley brought in right-handed pitcher Dylan Reina (44) who successfully shut down the Vikings in the final inning giving his the win.
“I think what this game came down to was the pitching,” says Brawley’s head coach Pedro Carranza. “Both pitchers on each team did tremendous and any real baseball fan knows that pitching wins the ball games.”
With this win, Brawley moves their league record to eight and one and will travel to El Centro for their next conference game hoping to improve their eight seed position for CIF play.
