BRAWLEY – The Brawley Wildcats (11-11) hosted the Imperial Tigers (11-11-1) for their second league match Tuesday. The Wildcats obviously came to play with a final score of 3-0 that allowed Brawley to advance with a five game lead over the Tigers.
“We came into tonight’s game with the same strategy as always, and that is to respect all and fear nobody,” said Pedro Carranza, Brawley’s head coach. “And we did have an advantage being at home, and I think that is what helped us in this tough match up.”
Early in the first three innings, Brawley found themselves connecting with the ball and took a quick two run lead on the Tigers. Garret Mamer (#7) was the first on his team to put the ball into play with a hard shot to the outfield. Then Cameron Ashurst (#19) came up to the plate with a homer in the first inning to bring in Mamer and himself for the first two runs of the ball game.
In a fourth inning rally, the Wildcats got back into their groove, lead by Roberto Brodell (#8) who hit a hard line drive down the third base line that managed to stay fair for a double. Next up, Cameron Abatti (#20) followed up Brodell with a long hit fly ball to center field for an RBI single. With this run, Brawley added to the lead to try and secure the win over the Tigers.
Imperial was able to get out of the inning with a ground ball hit by Jonathan Gonzalez (#1) to retire the side.
Imperial’s defense held the Wildcats scoreless through the seventh inning and came up for their final at-bat. However, Brawley’s pitcher Brodell (#8), secured his complete shutout with help from his team to hold the Tigers and brought the game to an end. With this win, Brawley will advance to play Holtville on May 13 for their next league match-up.
