EL CENTRO — The Brawley Wildcat soccer squad finished off its regular season last Thursday with an impressive 4-3 road victory over the Southwest Eagles, solidifying a position as the number one seeded team in the CIF San Diego Section Division V playoffs.
“We knew coming into the Southwest match that we needed a win to keep the number one seed in the CIF Division V rankings and have the opportunity to be home throughout the playoffs,” said Brawley Head Coach Frank Felix.
The Wildcats would do just that, and in exciting fashion against a tough Eagles squad.
The game started off with a quick goal from Wildcat Forward Willie Rubio in the early moments of the first half, as once again, a Gerardo Cortez throw-in would provide the early assist on the goal. Braulio Guzman would add another for the Wildcats moments later as he was able to convert a free kick from just outside the box to give Brawley a 2-0 lead early in the first half.
However, a defensive lapse, and own goal, and a Southwest counterattack would land the Eagles in a 3-2 lead midway through the second half.
With Southwest on a three goal run, the Wildcats made some tactical changes, leading to a more dominant game in the final third of their attack where Rubio went on a tear, scoring two late goals that lead the Wildcats to the 4-3 victory.
The first of the two goals was once again assisted by Cortez’ long throw in, although this time, Rubio would use his head to put the ball on target and tie the game at 3-3. With only moments remaining in the match, Rubio’s last goal would be his hat trick finish as he was able to dribble through the Eagles’ last line of defense and took a shot that would end up in the winning goal, finishing the Wildcat 4-3 comeback victory.
“I was very pleased with the team performance,” said Brawley’s Coach Felix. “We never stopped playing and displayed a lot character.”
With the win, the Wildcats will host the winner of Guajome Park Academy versus Del Lago Academy, on Wednesday night at Warne Field in Brawley in the CIF San Diego Section Division V soccer playoffs.
