BRAWLEY – The wrestling post season is now in Phase Two as Mission Hills High School is set to host this year’s San Diego Master’s Tournament.
The Master’s Tournament consists of the top placers of last weekend’s CIF Divisional Tournaments squaring off to determine San Diego’s top grapplers regardless of Division.
This year’s Division III Champions, the Brawley High Wildcats, will be well represented, qualifying twelve participants for the weekend’s tournament.
Qualifying as individual champions of their weight classes were Vincent Elizelde, Daxton Gordon, Isaac Moreno, and Jesse Ruelas.
Elizelde is looking to win his second Master’s Championship in a row and comes into the San Diego Master’s Tournament seeded first and ranked second in the state. Elizelde dominated all season going undefeated and placing first at top tournaments such as the Holtville Rotary Tournament, Five Counties Tournament, and the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. A championship win at Masters would set the stage perfectly for Elizelde’s shot at a state title that eluded him last season.
Also looking to bring home the gold is junior 126-pounder, Daxton Gordon. After first place finishes at the Holtville Rotary Tournament, Mt. Miguel Tournament, and last week’s CIF San Diego Section Division III Tournament, Gordon has earned the number one seed in the Masters Tournament.
Brawley High junior Isaac Moreno comes into the weekend’s tournament seeded 2nd and is ranked 16th in the state at the 120 pound weight class. Last year Moreno finished third at Masters at 113 pounds and hopes to improve on that finish this year a weight class higher. Moreno comes into the tournament having placed first at the Carlsbad Invite, Holtville Rotary Tournament, as well as last weeks CIF San Diego Section Division III Tournament.
At 132 pounds, Wildcat senior Jesse Ruelas enters the Master’s riding a wave of momentum having won the last two tournaments where he participated, the IVL Tournament and the CIF San Diego Section Division III Tournament.
Other Wildcats who qualified for Masters by finishing in the top six of last week’s CIF San Diego Section Division III Tournament and are looking to make some noise in the Masters Tournament are Jacob Moreno, Fernando Acuna, Victor Gonzales, Steven Baeza, Noe Gonzales, Daniel Jauregui, Marcos Martinez, and Blake Zeleny.
The San Diego Masters Wrestling Tournament is a two day event that will be hosted this year by Mission Hills. It starts Friday and ends Saturday night. Top wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state tournament in Bakersfield on March 7th and 8th.
