BRAWLEY — The Brawley High Wildcats enjoyed a productive Imperial Valley League week posting victories against Palo Verde at home on April 12 and on the road at Imperial High on Thursday night.
Against Imperial, the Wildcats bagged their hits early, posting five runs in the first inning off RBIs from Jacob Sapp, Roberto Brodell, and George Mickle. After a 5-0 first inning lead, it took the Tigers nearly five innings to get on the board, but when they did, they hit back hard, scoring three runs in the fifth inning.
Diego Favila provided the big hit bringing home two runs for the Tigers during the fifth, helping Imperial cut a five run lead down to two.
Heading into the last inning, the Wildcats found themselves battling for the win after jumping out to a big lead early, but the bats again found their mark as George Mickle was able to notch another hit and bring home two Wildcats, giving them a comfortable 7-3 lead. Robert Brodell provided relief service and Blake Zeleny earned the win on the mound. Velasquez pitched out of a jam in the fifth inning and sixth innings.
“Tonight was a hard-fought ball game from both sides,” said Pedro Carranza, Brawley’s head coach.
“We got some key hits early and were able to maintain tempo of the game. At the end, they came back, but we fought back and got a little bit more of a comfortable lead,” said Carranza of the game. “Like I said earlier this year to the team, this league is going to be very difficult, it’s going to be very competitive and there is not one team, in my opinion, above anybody else.”
Up next, the Wildcats will head to Holtville to take on the Holtville High Vikings on Tuesday night.
The Tigers will head to El Centro, visiting the Central Spartans on Tuesday night as well.
Both games are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
