BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High school boys’ soccer squad opened its 2016-2017 season Nov. 28 with a 4-3 victory over Indio High School at Warne Field in Brawley.
“It’s always good to start the season with a win and even better against a good team like Indio high school,” said Wildcat Head Coach Frank Felix. “The boys showed a lot of character by being able to overcome an early 3-1 deficit.”
The back and forth affair saw the Wildcats come from behind in the second half and shut down Indio’s offense, after giving up three goals in the first half.
Braulio Guzman began the scoring for the Wildcats with a quick strike from right outside the box to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the ninth minute.
From there, Indio would score three consecutive goals, in the 12 minute, the 16th, and the 28th minutes of the match.
Down the 1-3 in the very first game of the season, the Wildcats had to dig deep early and a response from Guzman in the 38th minute would provide the needed spark for the Wildcat squad.
In the second half, the Wildcats shutout the Indio squad and goals from Alonso Valenzuela, along with the game winner by sophomore Jonathan Duran, gave the Wildcats an exciting 4-3 victory in front of their home fans.
“We were able to compose ourselves and regrouped for the second half. We never lost our composure and kept fighting for every ball. Our hard work paid off with the win,” Felix said.
Up next, the Wildcats will be on the road taking on West Hills High School in Santee on Saturday.
