BRAWLEY — D.S. Art Studios & Gallery held a Whimsical Clay Sculpting ceramic class Wednesday afternoon, giving young artists an opportunity to create unique ceramic art pieces to detail and embellish with wire, glass beads, and other media while achieving interesting effects. The students selected to sculpt ceramic owls, and their final projects varied with their own creative styles.

“The students chose to make owls so we picked owls to do,” explained John Smerdon, class teacher. “What we’re doing is just taking raw clay and molding it and carving it away until we get the shape and look we want.”

“She’s doing a little rounder one and he’s doing a taller one with bows on it, and she’s going to add a little top hat to hers,” commented Smerdon on each of the students’ unique owl art pieces.

Students worked with two different types of clay and high-quality ceramic glazes. All the sculpting supplies and firing of the ceramic pieces were included in the class.

“It’s just a free project for this class,” said Smerdon. “There are times for classes where we can use the potters wheel for ceramics and create jars or cups, but right now, we’re just doing a free class for fun. I’ve taught several different classes. This is just one of them. I’ve taught other clay classes last summer and a painting class this summer.”
